Trial and License
How does the free trial work?
RAM Folder is free to try for 14 days from its first launch, with every feature and no limit on the number of RAM folders. The days left are shown in the app (“Trial: 9 days remaining”), with buttons to buy or activate a license.
The trial clock is stored securely on your Mac: setting the system date back doesn’t extend it.
What happens when the trial ends?
RAM Folder shows Trial Ended, and you can no longer create or mount RAM folders until you activate a license. Your data is not affected:
- your RAM folders stay in the sidebar, and you can still remove them;
- your folders and their saved files stay on your disk, as ordinary folders.
Unmount your RAM folders before the trial ends, or simply let the app save them when it quits: once unmounted, your folders hold all your files.
How do I buy and activate a license?
Click Buy a license in the app to purchase one. You receive a license key by email. Then click Activate, paste the key into the Activate License sheet, and confirm. RAM Folder verifies the key online, and all features are unlocked right away.
From the Terminal, ram-folder register-license does the
same. It also licenses the app: see Command
line.
Can I use my license on several Macs?
A license key can be activated up to 3 times in total. Each activation counts, including a reactivation on the same Mac after reinstalling it. When the limit is reached, activation fails with “This license key has reached its activation limit”: contact support to reset it.
Does RAM Folder need an internet connection?
For activation, yes. After that, RAM Folder checks the license online at each launch. If it can’t reach the license server, it relies on its last successful check for up to 24 hours. Beyond that, it behaves as if no license was active until it can check again. During the trial, this means nothing changes. After the trial, creating and mounting are unavailable until you are back online.
Mounted RAM folders are never affected: they stay mounted, and ejecting always saves them.
Why does RAM Folder say “Upgrade Required”?
A license covers one major version of RAM Folder. If you install a new major version, RAM Folder asks for a license for that version (“Your license key is for version 1. Purchase a new license for this version to continue.”). Your RAM folders and their files are not affected.
Why does RAM Folder say “License No Longer Valid”?
The license server rejected the key, for example because it was refunded or revoked. RAM Folder then goes back to the trial state: your RAM folders stay in the sidebar and can be removed, but creating new ones needs a valid key. Enter a new key, or contact support if you think it is a mistake.
Where is my license stored?
In
~/Library/Application Support/RAM Folder/license-store.json,
encrypted with a key tied to your Mac. Copying the file to another Mac
doesn’t transfer the license: activate the key there instead.
